Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. —Deuteronomy 34:7-9
And the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. —Deuteronomy 31:14
Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth… —Numbers 11:28
Moses died at 120 years of age. We are told that “His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated.” Wow! He had great eyesight and strength at that age. For us we are told that “Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). The aged today are typically “filled with pain and trouble” with not many years ahead of them. Not so with Moses. He lived with vigor right up to his death.
Joshua “had been Moses’ aide since youth” and now he was commissioned by God to lead Israel into the Land. “So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.” Moses, as led by the Lord God Almighty, prepared Joshua for this time to now be the leader of Israel. Joshua also lived long and died at the age of 110 (Joshua 24:29). What is unfortunate after his death and the death of the elders who lived with him is that “Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel” (Joshua 24:31) and “After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel” (Judges 2:10). There was a massive breakdown in preparing the next generation— a lack of discipleship.
Are we preparing the next generation? Like Moses, do we have a Joshua we are preparing so they will faithfully serve the Lord after we have died? Are we involved with the discipleship of younger people so they will faithfully serve the Lord after we are gone from this earth? May we use the rest of the time the Lord has given us to prepare those who will be living after we die so they will faithfully serve the Lord and that they would then in turn prepare the next generation after them. May it be so! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RMknFwZ748
Dear Father please help me to prepare the next generation to serve You after I have died. May this be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. So be it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJM0hFvz_64
