LIVING BY GODLY WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING OR WORLDLY WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING
Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? —Job 28:20
And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.” —Job 28:28
The wisdom of God is far different than the wisdom of man! Do you have worldly wisdom or Godly wisdom?
“Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” —I Corinthians 1:20-31
What do we learn from this passage?
- In God’s wisdom the world cannot know Him through worldly wisdom
- Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
- God power and wisdom is so much greater than man’s wisdom
- Not many believers were wise by human standards before they were called
- Not many believers were influential by human standards before they were called
- Not many believers were of noble birth before they were called
- God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise
- God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong
- God chose the lowly things of this world to nullify the things that are
- God chose the despised things of this world to nullify the things that are
- God chose the things that are not of this world to nullify the things that are
- God did this so that no one may boast before him
- It is because of God that we are in Christ Jesus
- Jesus is our wisdom from God
- Jesus is our righteousness from God
- Jesus is our holiness from God
- Jesus is our redemption from God
- So, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
`So, where does our wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.” Wisdom will be only worldly for those who do not “fear the Lord,” that is; to give Him the proper place He desires in their lives. And, one really will not have understanding unless they shun evil. Godlessness and wickedness are what this world stands for and needs to “be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will” (II Timothy 2:25-26). May it be so, Dear Father, that I, that Your Church, can encourage others to escape the devil’s trap and know true wisdom, Jesus.
