DO WE CARE?

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies: ‘The time is coming when everything in your palace—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says the Lord. ‘Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of Babylon’s king.’” Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “This message you have given me from the Lord is good.” For the king was thinking, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.” —Isaiah 39:5-8

What a selfish thought from Hezekiah! Even though his ancestors would experience the wrath of Babylon because of Hezekiah actions, it did not bother him because there would be peace and security in his lifetime. He was only concerned with what would happen in his life and not those who would come after him— not even his own sons!

How many people in our nation have this mindset? As long as there is peace and security in their own lifetime they do not care much about the lives of others, especially the next generations to come after them. Now this is true in the materialistic world, but also in the realm of the spiritual as well. 20 trillion dollars in debt is definitely going to affect those who live after us. Someone is going to have to pay off that debt if our generation does not. But when speaking to people about this they do not seem to care or even be concerned about this debt as if it was someone else’s problem. This is truly amazing.

So it is a problem in the spiritual realm as well. As followers of Jesus do we really believe in the dire consequences for those around us that do not know the Lord Jesus Christ? Are we concerned about their sin debt? Are we concerned not only for this generation, but also for the next generation and the generations that will follow that one? Or, are we comfortable in knowing Jesus ourselves, having peace and security, but do not consider the lost around us or the lost in future generations? “Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die; save them as they stagger to their death. Don’t excuse yourself by saying, “Look, we didn’t know.” For God understands all hearts, and he sees you. He who guards your soul knows you knew. He will repay all people as their actions deserve” (Proverbs 24:11-12). We will give an account to the Lord Jesus (II Corinthians 5:10).

Dear Father, may I truly have a concern for the lost around me and be faithful to share Jesus with them. Oh, may I not make excuses, but always be ready to point someone to the Lord Jesus. May this be so in the authority of Jesus and in Your Holy Spirit’s power.
