WE ARE NOT TO BE SERVING ALONE!
Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.” Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves. —Exodus 18:17-26
We are not meant to serve alone! Here’s the result in doing so— “You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out.” It is not “burnout” as many people describe being overly involved. No, it is to “only wear yourselves out.” Why? Because you are seeking to do too much on your own without the help of others. That is not God’s design. We are never meant to be “lone rangers” in our serving Him.
Instead, we are to gather around us those with different abilities and potentials. “Select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.” We are to appoint men like this which means we know them, we know their abilities and their character. These men are not randomly chosen nor voted in. They are selected because they are “capable men… men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.” This is why they are chosen and this is who we are to choose as well. In doing so, this “will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.”
Feeling “burn out?” It is not “burn out.” You are wearing yourself out. We need to know our limits and we need to have others serve along with us. That will keep us from being worn out. Dear Father, may this be how I serve and not seek to serve alone and be done in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus.
