So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us. ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” —Mark 9:20-29
This boy had been demon possessed from childhood. We are not told the details behind the why or how of the boy’s situation. We are told that the demon has tried to kill the boy by fire and water, caused the boy to fall to the ground, caused him to roll around, cause him to foam at the mouth and threw him into convulsions. How would the medical field respond to this? I think they would respond to so many other things they cannot resolve… they would drug him and put him in a psych ward. Many things cannot be explain or resolved through medicine because they are of a spiritual nature— such as this one.
When we take a look at the above passage we observe a strong reaction to seeing Jesus— bizarre behavior and physical symptoms. We are told this had been going on since the boy’s childhood. The demon tried to kill him and this would appear as attempted suicide today, no doubt. There are childhood experiences that result in demonic activity. Let’s not deny it and be aware of it.
There is no doubt that the above situation is a spiritual problem and Jesus said could only be resolved through prayer. How many situations today are we diagnosing as physical when they actually can only be resolved through prayer? The father in the above verses understood that his son was demonically possessed and that this was not a medical condition. Unfortunately in the West we are conditioned to think along medical resolutions instead of spiritual resolutions for all situations. Yes, some are medical, but we are fooling ourselves if we do not think some are spiritual issues as well that can only come out through prayer! Let us be discerning…
Dear Father, help me to understand those people who are not having medical issues, but demonically induced problems. May this be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtyVdC7E6Wo&index=2&list=RD_rR_Rdb1CTE
