END OF LIFE HERE TO BE GATHERED THERE!

 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people. —Genesis 49:33

             After living 147 years Jacob’s end of life scene seems to be so peaceful.  Death is not mentioned here.  Instead we read that he “breathed his last and was gathered to his people.”  Ok, breathing his last breath surely indicates death, but instead of mentioning death we are told that he “was gathered to his people.”  There appeared to be no struggle to hold on— no grasping to stay here any longer, but a gentle surrender of departure from this earthly body and a wonderful gathering to glory with those already there.  What joy!

            Jacob did not fear death.  He just saw this as a transitioning to where he would never die again, never have conflict or pain again, never shed tear or grieve again.  Is that not our desire as well?  Do we not say with the Apostle Paul— “I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far” (Philippians 1:23).  Is that our mindset as well or are we so caught up in this life that we desire to say here?  Paul saw himself staying here as long as it “is more necessary for you that I remain in the body” (Philippians 1:24).  But he had a great desire to “depart” or die and to be with Jesus.  Is that where our heart is?  Is it our desire to as long as we remain here to help others in their “progress and joy in the faith?” (Philippians 1:25).

            What a wonderful way to end life here.  Jacob gave final instructions— He taught right to the end.  He drew his feet up into his bed— the last comfort on this planet.  He breathed his last— as we all will.  He was gathered with his people— the goal of all of us who love the Lord God Almighty.  https://youtu.be/bo9ZWX1lEKI?t=1022

Dear Father may I be teaching/proclaiming Your Word right to the time of my death.  I so look forward to transitioning from this life to glory with Jesus and all who love Him.  Until then may I be faithful in encouraging others in their progress and joy in the faith.  May this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus.
