REST… IN JESUS!

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.  For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. —Hebrews 4:1-2

            Are you resting in our Lord? “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 28:30). How do we enter into this “rest?” We enter it when we hear the “good news” proclaimed, value the message, put our faith in the message, evidenced by obedience to the message and author of the message. This proof or fruit of believing in the finished work of Jesus on the cross will be seen in a person’s life (I Corinthians 15:1-1-5).

            There are many who say they believe, but there is no outward evidence in their lives that this is the case. They say they believe in the message, but they do not obey the message. Hearing the message only does not make one a believer (Matthew 7:24-27). Faith comes by hearing the message (Romans 10:17), but that faith that is truly faith is coupled together with evidence— “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” (James 2:26).  Both co-exist, neither exist alone (James 2:14-26).
