PRAY FOR GODLY LEADERS
PRAY FOR GODLY LEADERS
May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord, when they hear what you have decreed.
May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord is great. —Psalm 138:4-5
Try to imagine a world where those leading governments were praising our Lord and singing about the ways of the Lord! Wow… what a different world this would be. It would be a wonder to see leaders in this world hearing His Word and then obeying it! Yes, what a different world this would be.
Unfortunately, here in America and the vast majority of the world, leaders are not praising our Lord. They are not listening to His Word and applying it to their lives. They are not singing about the ways of our Lord. They are not considering His great glory. Because of this we are seeing the results of man’s ideas and ungodly leadership. Still, we are called to pray for our leaders. May we be doing so!
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time” (I Timothy 2:1-6).
“If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked” (Proverbs 29:12). An ungodly leader will be surrounded by ungodly advisers. This will move those in leadership to look out for their own interests and not those of the people. These type leaders elevate themselves and think they know what is best for the people. Some of these leaders will fortify their positions of power and treat the people they rule over badly. Wicked leaders do wicked things. We can see this easily down through the corridor of history and even in our world today.
Is it possible that our God could put godly leadership in authority over a nation? Of course it is. How many times has He done that in the history of Israel? He did it numerous times and so He could do so today. Let us pray to that end, but regardless of who is in political office the church is still the church and to carry out our Lord’s plans and purposes. It does not matter who is in office. Our loving obedience to Jesus is not to change even when the ways of man and the offices of man do. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
So Dear Father, please help me to be faithful to Jesus. He is always faithful. May this be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. So be it.
