BE HUMBLE AND NOT SELF-EXALTING

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. —Luke 14:11

            If we want to see what humility looks like then let us look at Jesus—

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross. —Philippians 2:5-7

            Jesus, God in the flesh, was equal with His Father (John 5:18). Stop and think about that! Truly think about Who Jesus is! “And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world existed” (John 17:5). Yes, He truly is God in the flesh— “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning” (John 1:1-2). “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).   “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18). “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15-17). “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (Hebrews 1:13).   Wow! Wow!! This is truly astounding!

            Taking on a body for Jesus is eternally humble. How else can you explain it? He left the glory of Heaven with His Father, a perfect place, and came to this sin invested world, the world He created and that was now in rebellion against Him. Not just come here, but came as a servant and not just as a servant, but willingly came here to be beaten and die a tortuous death on a cross— ALL BECAUSE HE LOVES US!   “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

            So the question is: Are you and I living humbly? Do we have the same attitude as our Lord Jesus? Or, are we exalting ourselves?
