COMPLETE THE WORK OUR LORD HAS GIVEN YOU!
Tell Archippus: “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.” —Colossians 4:17
What is our Lord God Almighty saying to you and I through this verse? It is very simple, isn’t it? “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.” So, the question is— What ministry have you and I received from our Lord to finish?
It is also clear, from Ephesians 2:10, that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Wow, first, you and I are God’s handiwork. So, God is doing something in and through us. This work that He has for us is work that He “prepared in advance for us to do.” And we to be “a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” (Titus 2:14). Are we eager to do the work He has called us to do?
Not only has He called us to a work or works to do, but He has also given us the gifts and abilities to carry out this work. God has given to each of us according to our ability (Matthew 25:15) and the grace and gifts given us (Romans 12:6). Now, what are we doing with what He has given you and me? Are you involved in the work He has given you? Are you growing in the work God has given you? Are you finding out the potential that God has given you? Do not be like the servant who said to his Master, “Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours” (Matthew 25:24-25). Our Lord expects us to be fruitful—
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” —John 15:4-8
Again, fellow followers/disciples of Jesus, brothers and sisters, “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.” Yes, Dear Father, may we do so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus.
