THE LORD IS ANGRY WHEN MOSES MAKES EXCUSES
But Moses said to the LORD, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” Then the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses and he said, “Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. You shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him. —Exodus 4:10-16
The Lord said to Moses, “Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10). But Moses came up with the excuse that he was “Eloquent” and that he was not “slow of speech and of tongue.” Have you ever used that excuse? Have you ever said, “I don’t speak well so I cannot go and do that.” Have you been disobedient to our Lord because of the way you assess yourself?
Our Lord gave Moses work to do and Moses assessed himself and then asked the Lord to “please send someone else.” Have you ever said or thought that? When our Lord wants you to do something do you secretly think that He will send someone else if you don’t go? Are you in disobedience to what our Lord desires?
What was our Lord’s response to Moses’ excuses? He said, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” But Moses wanted someone else to go. How did our Lord respond to Moses’ disobedience? He got angry with Moses, but also extended mercy and grace by providing Moses’ brother, Aaron, as the spokesman for Moses. Our Lord would direct Moses what to say and then Moses would then direct Aaron as to what to say.
So maybe you don’t want to do what our Lord is desiring of you to do because you lack self-confidence. Well, don’t do whatever He wants alone, but seek to have at least one other person to serve with you. Jesus sent His disciples out in teams, not as individuals serving by themselves (Luke 10). Even Paul was rarely alone and when he was, he did not want to be. He worked with teams. May we do the same. Yes, Dear Father, please develop many teams around us to serve in the areas You have called us to.
