Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s
Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” —Mark 12:17
Tax season is upon us again… Regardless of how wasteful our government can be with the tax revenue; we are still called by God to pay taxes. They will give an account to God one day as to how they spent His resources. Let us not forget, all we have is His. We, as followers/disciples of Jesus, acknowledge this… or we should! Yes, Jesus plainly said to give “Caesar what is Caesar’s.” In the U.S. we have the opportunity “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” as stated in the First Amendment of our Constitution. Yes, we can approach government leaders to right the things that may be wrong. We have that opportunity.
Jesus also stated to give “to God what is God’s.” This should be done willingly and cheerfully as stated in II Corinthians 9:7— “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Is this our attitude and motivation for giving? Are we giving what God would have us to give?
There is no question we are to be faithful with God’s resources. Yes, let us give to the government the taxes that are owed. Remember, these are God’s resources that the government is to be using wisely and will be held accountable. But let us also remember that all we have are God’s resources and “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” So, let us be wise in our giving in such a way that we honor our Lord. Yes, Dear Father, may this be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus.
