Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. —Luke 5:10-11

They had fished all night and it was hard work, yet they did not catch a single fish.  Now they were washing their nets after the long, disappointing night.  That’s when Jesus came along and a crowd of people were around Him, listening to Him.

Jesus got into Simon Peter’s boat and told Simon to “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”  After casting nets all night long and pulling them in without any fish at all, now Jesus is telling him to do it again.  Peter replied, “But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

What was the result of Peter’s obedience to Jesus?  “When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink” (Luke 5:6-7).

Wow… if Jesus knew where the fish were or could draw the fish to the nets, then what did He know about Peter? After Simon saw this great catch he said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”  Peter knew if Jesus knew this about fish and could bring such a catch, then Peter knew Jesus understood everything about Him.  How could such a sinful man like Peter be near Jesus?  But Jesus replied, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”  After Jesus said this “they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.”

They would now be fishers of men.  Regardless of your vocation, Jesus has called you to be a fisher of men.  Don’t be afraid!  But to be a fisher of men you need to be following Jesus.  He will make you a fisher of men and He will send you out to fish for men.  Will you obey?  Yes, Dear Father, this is my desire. May I be a fisher of men by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son, my Lord Jesus. God’s Answer For Man – The Lamb (
