A PRAYER ACKNOWLEDGING GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

A PRAYER ACKNOWLEDGING GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

The Lord brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up.  The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.  He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. —-I Samuel 2:6-8

This portion of God’s Word above is from the prayer of Hannah after the Lord answered an earlier prayer.  She praises Him for Who He is and what He does.  She previously had been “praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard” (I Samuel 1:13).  Because she was barren she was “deeply troubled.”  She “was pouring out (her) soul to the Lord” (I Samuel) and had “been praying here out of (her) great anguish and grief.” (I Samuel 1:15-16).

Hannah acknowledges many things in this prayer in I Samuel 2:1-10—

  • She rejoices in the Lord
  • She acknowledges she is exalted by His strength
  • She acknowledges His deliverance
  • She acknowledges there are none holy like the Lord
  • She acknowledges there are none besides Him
  • She acknowledges there is no Rock like our God
  • She acknowledges the Lord knows all that is said
  • She acknowledges that He weighs all deeds
  • She acknowledges He breaks warriors bow
  • She acknowledges He strengthens those who stumble
  • She acknowledges He feeds the hungry
  • She acknowledges He causes the barren womb to be fruitful
  • She acknowledges He brings death
  • She acknowledges He makes alive
  • She acknowledges He brings people to the grave
  • She acknowledges He raises people up
  • She acknowledges He brings poverty
  • She acknowledges He brings wealth
  • She acknowledges He humbles
  • She acknowledges He exalts
  • She acknowledges He raises the poor from the dust
  • She acknowledges He lifts the needy from the ash heap
  • She acknowledges He enables to sit with princes
  • She acknowledges He enables to inherit a throne of honor
  • She acknowledges the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s
  • She acknowledges He has set the world on those foundations
  • She acknowledges He will guard the feet of His faithful servants
  • She acknowledges He will silence the wicked
  • She acknowledges one does not prevail by strength
  • She acknowledges those who oppose the Lord will be broken
  • She acknowledges the Most High will thunder from heaven
  • She acknowledges the Lord will judge the ends of the earth
  • She acknowledges the Lord gives strength to his king
  • She acknowledges the Lord will exalt the horn of His anointed

Do you and I understand the Sovereignty of God as Hannah expressed in her prayer?  Dear Father may we understand Your Sovereignty by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x8TZiwPGa0
