The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. —Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

What is the duty of man to God? It is obedience. This is an obedience out of love for God and love for people (Matthew 22:37-40). It is not obedience out of an attitude of “I have to” but out of a grateful heart of “I want to, I desire to.” It is not a drudgery in obedience, but a joy to be obedient. I am to have a proper perspective of who God is as the King of all Creation and a proper perspective as to who I am as a child and servant created by the King and for the King (Colossians 1:16).

Each of us will give an account of ourselves to God— “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad” (II Corinthians 5:10).  This is a very sobering fact and so “dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming” (I John 2:28).

Yes my Father, may I be living in such a way that I will hear the words—“Well done, good and faithful servant.” Yes, may this be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus your Son.
