BE LIKE JESUS—- SERVE!
But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. It shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” —Matthew 20:25-28
It used to be said of government officials that they were “public servants.” I cannot remember the last time that I heard that said of a government official. That is very sad. The greatest government official would be a servant to the people. They would have the best interest of the people in mind.
But instead of being servants it seems that many of today’s government officials fall under what Jesus said of them—- “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.” J. Warner Wallace, author of Cold Case Christianity, says that all crime motivations can be boiled down to three: 1- Greed for money, 2- Sexual lust, 3- Desire for power and he does add 4- insanity, but this is rare. “People plain and simply do crazy things, but they are not insane.” When Jesus said, “that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them” He is talking about their exerting power over the people. They love power! His followers are not to be like that.
Jesus is the greatest example of servant hood. Just consider Who He is! The Eternal Creator and yet He was willing to take on flesh and become a baby, live among us for 33 years, teach us for 3 years, allow His own miniscule creations to reject Him, beat Him, spit on Him, mock Him, make Him carry His own cross of execution and then execute Him on that cross! And what do you have to complain about? Who will you serve today?
Dear Father may I be like my Lord Jesus and be a servant. May it be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. So be it!
