GOING THE WAY OF ALL THE EARTH

“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses.” —I Kings 2:2-3

Both my parents made professions of faith in their latter years. Elaine and I had invited a professor and his wife over for dinner one night when my parents were visiting where we were attending a Bible college. After an two hour discussion with he and his wife, we all got down on our knees and my parents called on the Name of the Lord. That was just a couple years before my dad died.

My youngest brother, David, was sitting with my dad in the early morning hours when he came out of a coma he was in. The doctor said he was probably brain dead. But he woke up and with his last breath said to my brother, “Be strong.” He watched my mom come around the end of the bed. We all said “good-bye and that we loved him” as his body stretched out, relaxed and his spirit left. Yes, my dad went “the way of all the earth” and so will I and so will you unless Jesus comes back in our life-time. Wouldn’t that be wonderful— not to have to experience death, but to have our bodies changed in the “twinkle of an eye” and then be with Jesus forever?

In the verses above King David said to his son Solomon that he was “about to go the way of all the earth.” He told Solomon to “be strong and act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires.” There was a point when my dad was sick that he had each of my siblings come to talk with him privately. He had encouraged each of the 5 of them to live for Jesus. Only my oldest sister who has died called on His Name so far. Another brother had made a profession of faith, but there seems to be little evidence that it was genuine. The Lord knows…

Walking in loving obedience to the Lord God Almighty is the best evidence that a person truly knows the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Father, thank You for eternal life in Jesus. I so look forward to be in Heaven with Him and all who love Him. What joy that will be! Until then help me to live faithfully doing Your will for Your glory in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son, Jesus. So be it!
