Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David. —Ruth 4:21-22

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife. —Matthew 1:5-6

The son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon. —Luke 3:31-32

In this section of the genealogy of our Lord Jesus we see a harlot, a Moabite and an adulterous included. Nobody is beyond God working through them to accomplish His purposes. Boaz’s mother was Rahab. She became a believer and aligned with Israel, hiding the spies which saved her whole family. Typically the Jews were not to marry foreigners, but Ruth became a follower of God as she clung to Naomi and said, “Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Boaz redeemed her. And then there was Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, who had committed adultery with King David. Yet God worked in all these people’s lives to further the lineage that our Lord Jesus would come through “according to the flesh” (Romans 1:3).

It is a joy to see our Sovereign Lord work through people and circumstances that we do not think He will work through. Look at ourselves! Would you have thought God would have chosen you to work through? If you say yes, then do you think you deserved to be chosen by God? Do you think you were good enough? I don’t think so. None of us deserved to be chosen by God. He chooses those He desire to choose for His purposes. It is all by grace, whether in the Old Testament or the New Testament. We are His by His grace. He is not hindered by people’s background or circumstances. He will work through whoever He desires to. Praise God for that! So brother and sister… He has chosen you to work through. Now, be faithful to Him!

Dear Father I glory in how You work. Truly, the world cannot understand Your ways because they do not believe Your Word. Thank You for the Light of Your Word. Oh, may I be faithful to Your desires. May it be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. So be it!
