DENYING KNOWING JESUS

So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance. The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!” But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!” —Luke 22:54-57

When Peter was warming himself near the fire, he was identified by a servant girl as being one of Jesus’ followers. Peter was sitting around the fire with guards and he denied knowing Jesus saying, “I don’t even know him!” Peter was fearful for his life. How about you and I? When we are among people, do we deny Jesus either by word or action or inaction? Do we become fearful for our lives— what people might think about us? Or maybe we are concerned about our job or friendships or relationships with relatives. Just maybe we are concern about persecution or even death.

Oh, may You and I stand boldly to proclaim our Lord Jesus Christ. May we not be fearful, but bold as a lion as the Spirit of God empowers us! Yes, let us trust the Spirit of the Lord guide us in word and action and not shrink back. May it be so in the power of the Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. Stand for Him today!
