Then Jesus presented them with a question. “Why is it,” he asked, “that the Messiah is said to be the son of David? For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.’ Since David called the Messiah ‘Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?” —Luke 20:31-44

Jesus asked this question about the Messiah which is a question He asked to encourage people to consider who He is. The question was how can the Messiah be both Lord and at the same time be the son of David, a descendant of David? Jesus is saying that He is both Lord and a descendant of David. God’s Word is clear on this— “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being” (Philippians 2:6-7). In Romans 1:3-4 we read “The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a marvel of all marvels that our Awesome Lord God Almighty, Father of all, Creator along with His Son and His Spirit, present everywhere at all times would come to this teeny tiny speck of a planet in this vast universe. Jesus leaving the glory of Heaven (John 17:1-5) to come to a fallen, sin sick, wicked people and allow them, the ones He created, to mock, beat, brutalize, torture and then crucified Him on the cross— all because of His love for us! This stretches our minds beyond fully comprehending. It leaves us with great thoughts of His majesty in which our puny minds don’t even come close to expressing His infinite Being. Yet, he loves us, is concerned more about us than we are about ourselves and extends His Great Grace toward us. Do we understand who we are in the Lord Jesus Christ? Dear Father, I am overwhelmed with Who You are and what You have done for me through Your Son— the Lord and son of David. Oh, may I grow in my love for You and seek to be and do what You desire in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son. May it be so!
