FOLLOW JESUS!
“Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said. —Matthew 9:9
Are you following Jesus? There are those who follow other men and hang on their every word. It is not wrong to listen and learn from godly leaders. We should be doing that, but if it is at the point where a person is being fully trusted without checking their teaching from the Word of God ourselves, then we are in a dangerous place. We are to follow Jesus and those who are following Jesus, but if we do not check out what men are saying from the Word of God then we are putting our faith in men and not God. No man is perfect, God’s Word is.
Then there are those who follow a particular denomination as if that denomination has all the truth and all others are faulty. This is a dangerous mindset as well. So it is when people follow theological systems that man has developed as if they are faultless. The point is, be careful that we are following Jesus and not some idea that man has come up with that may steer us away from the truth of God’s Word.
We need to be like the Bereans— “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men” (Acts 17:11-12). These people listened to Paul, but they also “searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” Many came to believe because they saw the truth of God themselves and that is what we need to do. Praise God for those who teach and preach God’s Word, but they want people to see the truth for themselves and follow Jesus. Dear Father, please help me to search Your Word daily and to check everything I am taught by others from Your Truth for myself. Thank You for those who faithfully preach and teach Your Word. May I be one of those in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus. May it be so!
