THE ETERNAL SON OF GOD

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy. —I John 1:1-4

In the gospel of John 1:1 we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” and that “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18). From the Word of God there is no doubt who Jesus is. The Jews understood His claim to be God in the flesh and “For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:18). There was no doubt about what the Jews believed— “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33). Yes, God’s Word is very clear about whom Jesus is— “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3). He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things! (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17). Dear Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, that we could have eternal life though His finished work on the cross and through His resurrection. May I live a life of gratitude in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Jesus my Lord.
