But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” —Matthew 17:5-7
Someone of importance comes to town people flock to hear what they have to say. It could be a world figure, a political figure or some other celebrity. Thousands of dollars are forked over just to have a meal in the presence of one of these people or to buy tickets to see them.
In the verses above the most important personage ever to be on this planet is largely ignored. Yet listen to what the Lord God Almighty said about His Son— “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” Are you listening to Him? Are you hearing Jesus?
“Listen to him.” That is not optional talk. That is a command to do so. We are commanded to listen to Jesus and to heed what He has to say. But, the majority of people take this as an option. Unfortunately, there is a large group that would call themselves Christians but they also do not listen to or heed what Savior Jesus is saying. It is a sad state to settle for.
May you and I hear what the Lord Jesus is saying and then be obedient to Him. This is what love for Him is (John 14:21) and how we show that we truly love His children (I John 5:2-3). May it be so!
Dear Father, may I listen to Jesus and live out what He desires through the power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, may this be the case!
