BE MORE OF A SERVANT LIKE JESUS!
BE MORE OF A SERVANT LIKE JESUS!
A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. —Luke 22:24-27
Jesus, the Word that became flesh, the One Equal with and One with our Father, the Creator of all things and yet He came as a servant to serve us! Wow… Almighty God stooped sooo low to serve us! Let us learn from His example!
Jesus asked the questions— “For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table?” Typically people would think that those being served are greater than those serving. But Jesus turns this around by showing us the example from His own life on earth and then challenges us to be servants like Him.
Would you rather serve or be served? If we are honest the natural inclination would be a desire to be served— to sit at a table and let others serve us or to sit while someone else washed our feet. But that is the world’s perspective. The Kingdom perspective is that we serve the tables and wash the feet and to do so with a grateful and humble heart— like our Lord Jesus.
Who are you looking to serve today… this week? Are you upset because someone is not serving your needs? Do you think someone ought to be catering to you? Is there someone you think ought to be doing something for you? This is not how we are to be thinking. We should be thinking— “Whose needs can I meet by serving? Who can I cater to in loving service? What person ought I be serving?” Is this how we are thinking? Servants think of how they can be serving and not who can be serving them!
Those who would be last will be first and those who would be first will be last— “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the last of all and the servant of all” (Matthew 23:11). We typically want to in the front of the line whether it is in a grocery store, at a sports event, at a drive up bank teller… Who wants to be last? But Jesus turns this around and the one who is going to be first, the one who is going to be great in the Kingdom will be those who are willing to serve anyone. They are not willing to put themselves in the front, but are willing to be in the back… way back. Is this our attitude? Are we being like Jesus? May we be so for His honor and glory! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gOjlAUn9JM
Dear Father may I be more of a servant like Jesus. Oh may this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus. So be it!
