CITIES
CITIES
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” —Genesis 11:4
Mankind as a whole is disobedient to God. It was true in Babel when they gathered in opposition to God and sought to build a city, a tower and a name for themselves as mentioned in the above verse. It is true today as well. Men seek to gather and build cities and come up with their own religious systems to try to reach Heaven. They want to “make a name for themselves” and seek to find their value apart from God. It doesn’t work or does so only temporarily.
Look at the cities of the world. They are a mess. Because of the density of population more crimes are committed, there is more poverty, there are more homeless… There is more of just about anything including the vast unconcern for God and His ways. True, there are more jobs there as well and so many people flock to the cities for those jobs, whether they commute daily or re-locate to live there.
Within cities there are numerous groups of religious systems— world religions and cults. This occurs because of the large diversity of people in cities, many who have migrated from other nations. So in the cities there is quite a range of religious ideas as to how one gets to heaven or at least to another spiritual advancement. Cities are a great opportunity to reach the peoples of the world with the gospel without having to go to another nation.
There are those who want to make themselves a name in the city… gang members surely, mafia probably as well as other criminal groups. Businesses want to make a name for themselves as well and are not always above board in doing so. Unfortunately cites also contain corrupt politicians seeking their own selfish desires and not the best interests of the people.
This does not mean rural areas do not have these problems, but they are surely amplified in the cities. The whole world is a mess and this should encourage us to be sharing the Good News with the lost and to encourage us to be looking more and more to be “looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:10). Looking forward to being in that city! “Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).
Dear Father, this world is not our home, Your Heaven is! I so desire to be there, but whether I am I the country or in the city, please help me to be sharing the gospel with people. May this be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son, Jesus. So be it! https://youtu.be/bo9ZWX1lEKI?t=1019
