GROW!

GROW!

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. —Hebrews 5:12-14

How long have you been following Jesus? Are you still growing? Have you stagnated? Are you truly becoming all that Jesus wants you to be? Are you serving as He wants you to serve? Oh, please do not just go through the motions.

The Hebrews mentioned in the above passage should have been much further along in their maturity than they were. As a matter of fact, according to the above verses, they had forgotten what they had previously learned to the point that that they now had to be taught the same things all over again!

Everybody starts off following Jesus as an infant, but to grow beyond being an infant only to return to being an infant strongly states something is drastically wrong. We are not to stay on milk; we are to get to solid food. The milk of the Word of God only helps us grow so far and then we need solid food to truly sustain us in our walk with Jesus.

New born babies love milk. It is a joy to hear my daughter and son-in-law’s twin girls feeding. They can’t get the milk fast enough. These two little girls have such a desire for the milk and what a noise of contentment they make when feeding. One of the girls has already started to hold her own bottle to feed herself! Soon they will be on more solid food that will satisfy them for longer periods of time. They are getting so big… they are growing! We too need to be on solid food that sustains us for longer periods of time when life’s curves are thrown at us. Are we growing?

The goal for all infants is maturity. So it is with newborn babies in the Lord Jesus Christ. The goal is their spiritual maturity in Jesus. It is then that they will be acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.” It is then that they “by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” This is where we want followers of Jesus to be so “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.” This is why the Apostle Paul said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (I Corinthians 11:1). Dear Father, may I truly be maturing in You and encouraging others around me to be maturing in You as well. Oh, that we would seek to honor You by being what You desire us to be and to be serving as You desire us to be serving. May it be so in the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of our Lord Jesus.
