JESUS DESIRES SERVANT LEADERSHIP

JESUS DESIRES SERVANT LEADERSHIP

But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” —Matthew 20:25-28

The difference between leadership in this world and the leadership under Jesus is this— worldly leadership exercises authoritatively over the people whereas the greatest leadership under Jesus is that of servanthood.  Jesus said that great leadership are those leaders who are willing to be servants.  They are actually first on His list of greatness.

Look at governmental leadership in our present day.  Who stands out in your mind as a servant leader?  Who really sees themselves as a “civil servant?”  No names flash to my mind.  Those in governmental leadership seem to be all about power and authority… exercising their authority over the people.  Hopefully there are those in government for the right reasons and seek to be servant leaders.

See… worldly rulers view themselves as “over” the people.  The people they govern are seen as under them.  But with servant leadership a leader is willing to be “under” a person or at their feet, willingly taking the lowest position to serve.  This is how they see themselves— they are a servant to all the people.  Where does that exist in government today?  It may, but I don’t see it.  Hopefully there are those with this servant attitude in government.  If so, may they be of great influence!

But, let us take a look at the Body of Christ.  Do we see servant leadership there?  We should and we better.  This is the type of leadership greatness Jesus identified He desired.  Are you a servant leader, am I?  This is what our Lord desires us to be.  May we be so.  Truly, the greatest is a servant to all, willing to be at the back of the line and serve all before them.  Where are the servant leaders in the church?  The majority of them will never be known because they are quietly serving, not desiring to be known or make a name for themselves.  May we be like them— serving! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6fA35Ved-Y

Dear Father may we be the type of servant leaders that Jesus described.  May this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus.  Yes, may this be so!
