FREED BY OUR PASSOVER LAMB!
In the second month on the fourteenth day at twilight they shall keep it. They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it. —Numbers 9:11-13
Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. —Exodus 12:6-8
Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you left Egypt in haste—so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt. —Deuteronomy 16:3
The Passover Lamb was to be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. The unleavened bread was a reminder of their affliction and haste in leaving Egypt. The bitter herbs were a reminder of their bitter bondage for centuries in Egypt. The Lamb’s blood is a reminder that the blood applied to the lintel and door posts of their homes in Egypt saved them for judgement. The Israelites were to keep the Passover “so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt.”
Today we know that Jesus is the Lamb of God, the Chosen Passover Lamb to take away our sins and is a constant reminder of our departure out of the world system (John 1:29; I Cor 5:7). When we take of the cup, we remember His shed blood at the cross applied to our lives saves us from judgment. When we take of the bread, we remember the sinful lives He saved us from and the sorrow they contained, but also through His Body broken for us we are now sinless, blameless in His sight. Experientially we are becoming more like Him and have not gained perfection yet and will not until we see Him. But we are to be remembering that He saved us out of this world system headed by Satan (II Corinthians 4:4), that kingdom of darkness and the power of Satan (Acts 26:17-18) and He transferred us into the kingdom of light, the kingdom of Jesus (Colossians 1:12-13).
Yes, let us remember, every time we take part in the Lord’s Table, the bitter life that Satan and sin held us bondage to. But now let us ponder the freedom that we have in our Passover Lamb, Jesus. He rescued us out of Satan’s power and darkness and into His kingdom of light where Jesus is King. Rejoice! Dear Father, I thank You for freeing me through Jesus, our Passover Lamb. Thank You for freeing me from all the wickedness of my past. Thank You for saving me to eternal life with Jesus and all who love Him. Out of gratefulness may I live faithfully for You.
