THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS— POWER TO THOSE BEING SAVED, FOOLISHNESS TO THOSE PERISHING

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God…   Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God….  It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” —I Corinthians 1:18, 24, 30-31

             The message of the cross—

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.” —I Corinthians 15:3-8

— “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  Those who do not know the Lord just do not understand.  Many do not want to understand and will not take the time to understand.  Even though their eternal destiny is at stake, they will not look into the most important event ever to take place— the cross of Jesus Christ and His resurrection.

             On the other hand, the message of the cross “to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”  Indeed, Jesus is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” and yet, to the world, the cross is “a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles” (I Corinthians 1:23).  Not only is Jesus the wisdom and power of God, but He also is “our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”  So, even as the world denies Him, we will boast in Him Who is the Creator and Sustainer of all things— our Savior, Jesus Christ.  And it is because of God drawing us to Jesus that we are in Him.  God did it! (John 6:44).
