SCOFFERS OF THE TRUTH OF CHRISTMAS— JESUS!
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. — II Peter 1:3
So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. —II Peter 1:12-15
For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. —II Peter 1:21
Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. —II Peter 3:3-10
We have all we “need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” Yet, Peter desires to remind them so that after he dies, they “will always be able to remember these things.” These things are from God’s Word coming through God’s messengers— “though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” And we are told to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (II Peter 3:18). Again, how do we do that? Well, we are told that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (II Timothy 3:16-17).
Be sure, “in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, ‘Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.’” These scoffers—
- Follow their own evil desires
- Mock Jesus’ second coming
- Deliberately forget how all things were created in the beginning
- Deliberately forget the judgment by flood in Noah’s day
- Deliberately forget that judgment is coming by fire
- Deliberately forget the ungodly will be judged
- Deliberately forget God is on a different time table
- Don’t understand that God is patiently waiting for others to be saved
- Don’t understand God doesn’t want any to perish
- Don’t understand that God desires everyone to come to repentance
- Don’t realize “the day of the Lord will come like a thief.”
- Don’t understand “The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.”
