OTHERS TO BE OF GREATER INFLUENCE THAN ME!
OTHERS TO BE OF GREATER INFLUENCE THAN ME!
When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” —II Kings 2:9-10
Elijah desired to do something for Elisha before Elijah was taken off this planet. Elisha said, “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit.” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.”
Oh, to have someone or a bunch of someones that would desire to be greater than me. Not that I am anyone great, but to have some live on that would be at least twice as effective as I am and even more times so. Elisha, as a fellow servant of Elijah, had been with Elijah and had seen our Lord God Almighty work wonders in and through Elijah. He had a desire for our Lord to work doubly through Him.
Elijah said “You have asked a difficult thing, yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” So for this to happen, Elisha needed to continue in the presence of Elijah right to the very end when Elijah would be taken to heaven. And so what was the result?
“As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, “The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.” —II Kings 2:11-15
And so it happened just as Elijah said it would after Elisha had made the request. Dear Father, be pleased to touch the lives of others to be a far greater influence than I will ever be. Yes, may this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit as You did with Elisha and do so in the authority of Your Son Jesus. So may it be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqWYSyDZYIg
