The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them! –Psalms 136:15-18
Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one. —I Corinthians 8:4
Nations, tribes and peoples come up with all kinds of idols to worship, but “there is no God but one.” And God’s Word is “written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).
Idols “have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths.” How sad that people actually worship such things. This is demonic and rebellion against God. These idols have no life and “Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them!” How are they like them? Idols are lifeless, dead and that is what people are like that make them and trust them— “dead in (their) trespasses and sins” and following “the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:1-2). Those trusting in idols, which is anything other than God, including self, need to turn from their own ways and come “to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will” (II Timothy 2:25-26).
So, dear followers of Jesus, brothers and sisters, we are to take the good news of Jesus to idol worshippers so they can come to know the True God through His Son, Jesus Christ— “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).
