MOTIVATION FOR GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP

MOTIVATION FOR GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP

Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” —I Samuel 8:10-18

The Lord warned what it would be like to have a king over the people.  Samuel relayed this to the people.  This is what the king would require as his rights—

  • He will take your sons to serve with his chariots
  • He will have your sons run in front of his chariots
  • He will assign your sons to be commanders of various sized groups
  • He will assign your sons to plow and reap his fields
  • He will assign your sons to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots
  • He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks and bakers
  • He will take the best of your fields, vineyards, olive groves and give them to his attendants
  • He will take a tenth of our grain and vintage and give to his officials and attendants
  • He will take your servants, the best of your cattle, your donkeys for his own use
  • He will take a tenth of your flocks
  • He will take you as his slaves

When this would happen the people would cry out for relief from the king they have chosen, but the Lord would not answer them!  They made their choice and now they would have to live with it.

To a large degree this is what happens to us in the U.S. and other parts of the world today.  We want a particular government leader over us and vote them in or they get in some other way.  Once they are in they care about themselves and what they can get and not what they can give.  This is not true of all leaders, but the vast majority is just out to what bests their own interests.  This happens to different degrees.  Some are greedier than others.  Some are more self-absorbed than others.  Some are just in it for themselves.  But praise God for those who are serving for the right reasons.  They may be few, but let us pray they will have great impact!

Yes, Dear Father, thank You for those in government service that are serving for the right reasons.  May you be pleased to expose those that are in it for only themselves.  May You be pleased to replace them.  May this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s392HyzQ79M
