THE BETRAYER

And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.” —Matthew 26:21-25

Judas would betray Jesus for a mere 30 pieces of silver.  Judas was disloyal to Jesus, the Creator and Sustainer of all things (Colossians 1:15-18), for the cost of a dead slave— “If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull is to be stoned to death” (Exodus 21:32).  From what I read that would be betraying Jesus for what would amount to just under $200 today.  Handing over the Son of God for a mere $200!

Really, the whole human race has betrayed Jesus.  There are those who will “come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will” (II Timothy 2:26).  I thank God that He drew me to Himself and that I came to my senses.  There was a time that I was not thinking right about God and surely not thinking right about His Son or His Holy Spirit.  I was betraying Him for what I wanted to do…  I am grateful that He brought me from  being a betrayer to befriending me, being my Savior and my Lord.

Let us encourage those around us who have betrayed Him.  They are not loyal to Him or thinking rightly about Him.  May we share His Word with them and encourage them to “come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will” (II Timothy 2:26).  Yes, Dear Father may this be so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Son Jesus.
