OVERCOMERS

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. —John 16:33

Here in this verse there are three things for us to consider which Jesus told us. 1- In Jesus we have peace. 2- On this earth we will have many trials and sorrows. 3- Jesus has overcome the world.

First— we have peace in Jesus. Romans 5:1-2 tells us “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.” We who were once sinners, spiritually dead, under God’s wrath are now saints, made alive in Christ and are no longer enemies of God, but His friends. We are no longer in rebellion against God but are at peace with Him.

Also in Philippians 4:6-7 we read “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” God gives us an inner peace regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in. We need to be in constant communication with Him. This is wonderful!

Second— Trials and sorrows are just part of this fallen world we live in. We should not be surprised when we go through them or are in them. God works through these to test and grow our faith in Him (James 1:1-4). Satan would like to knock us down through trials and sorrows. The first chapter of the book of Job is always good to reflect upon. We need to keep an eye on the finish line of the race that has been laid out for us (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Third— Jesus has overcome the world through the resurrection and ascension. He told us to take heart or courage because we too are overcomers by our faith in Him! (I John 5:1-5). We overcome this world, sin and death through Jesus and will be in Heaven one day with Him because of Him! Thank You, dear Father, for the promises of Your Word. May I cling to what You have to say in the authority of Jesus and by the Holy Spirit’s power.
