YOUR MONEY MOTIVATION

He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. —Ecclesiastes 5:10

            Money does not bring satisfaction, nor to the one who loves his wealth.  Remember that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.  It is sad that there are those whose focus is so much on money that they “have wandered from the faith” and that they also have “pierced themselves with many griefs.”  This is all self-inflicted.

            It is interesting as well that in the Parable of the Sower the one soil that is fruitless is the thorny soil (Matthew 13:22).  “The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.”  One reason there is no fruit from the seed sown among the thorns is because of “the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word.”  Those whose main focus in life is to attain wealth will have a faith that is fruitless and it is questionable if they truly have faith.

            Riches also are uncertain— “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself. When you glance at wealth, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky” (Proverbs 23:5).  We need to make sure we have a faith focus and proper motivation when it comes to money because “riches are not forever” (Proverbs 27:24), but they can be used to impact eternity.  “I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings” (Luke 16:9).  What is the focus of our use of finances?

            Money in itself is neutral.  It is our attitude and motivation in the use of money that our Lord will judge.  We are to “provide for (our) relatives, and especially for (our) own household” or we have “denied the faith and (we are) worse than an unbeliever” (I Timothy 5:8).  We “must work, doing something useful with (our) own hands, that (we) may have something to share with those in need” (Ephesians 4:28).  Work is a God-given responsibility!

            God has given all of us different levels of wealth to be His stewards of.  It does not belong to us.  It is His and we will give an account as to how we used it.  So, let us assess our finances and see where our priorities are.  May they line up with what He desires of us.
