OUR LORD CAN EASILY “TURN THE TABLE”
OUR LORD CAN EASILY “TURN THE TABLE”
That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. —Esther 6:1-2
Our Lord is not limited at all to accomplish what He desires. He can and does work through any individual He desires and through any situation He desires. This is clearly seen in Esther as our Lord works through individuals and situations to accomplish what He desires. In this case, it was to protect the Jewish population and to expose the evil intent of their enemies.
But our Lord worked through a sleepless night of the king to have records read to him in which he realized nothing had been done for Mordecai, the man (Jewish) who had saved his life by exposing a conspiracy to kill the king. At the same time, Haman, who hated Mordecai and was planning his execution, came into the presence of the king. He was ordered by the king to honor Mordecai. “Go at once,” the king commanded Haman. “Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended” (Esther 6:10). Haman believed the king was about to honor him and yet now he was ordered to honor the one he despised.
Esther exposed Haman at her banquet as one who wanted to kill her and her people. “King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, “Who is he? Where is he—the man who has dared to do such a thing?” Esther said, “An adversary and enemy! This vile Haman!” (Esther 7:5-6). This enraged the king. Haman had erected a pole to impale Mordecai on. The king said, “Impale him on it!” So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king’s fury subsided.” (Esther 7:9-10).
“King Xerxes replied to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Because Haman attacked the Jews, I have given his estate to Esther, and they have impaled him on the pole he set up. Now write another decree in the king’s name in behalf of the Jews as seems best to you, and seal it with the king’s signet ring—for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.” —Esther 8:7-8
“The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children, and to plunder the property of their enemies”. —Esther 8:11
“On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the edict commanded by the king was to be carried out. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them.” —Esther 9:1
Our Lord can move people and situations to accomplish His will. In this case, “when the plot came to the king’s attention, he issued written orders that the evil scheme Haman had devised against the Jews should come back onto his own head, and that he and his sons should be impaled on poles” (Esther 9:25). “These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city. And these days of Purim should never fail to be celebrated by the Jews—nor should the memory of these days die out among their descendants.” (Esther 9:28). Today, Purim is still celebrated on the 14th day of Adar which is February or March on our calendar. Surely this situation is summarized well by Psalm 54:3-5
“Arrogant foes are attacking me; ruthless people are trying to kill me— people without regard for God. Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. Let evil recoil on those who slander me; in your faithfulness destroy them.”
This is exactly what happened in the book of Esther. So take comfort. Our Lord God Almighty is orchestrating people and events to carry out His purposes. Don’t fret, but be faithful to what He desires of you. May this be so by the power of His Holy Spirit and in the authority of His Son Jesus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsQmsEE_2-s&list=RDPsQmsEE_2-s&start_radio=1
