DEATH COMES TO US ALL!
When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the LORD may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’” —I Kings 2:1-4
Then David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.— I Kings 2:10
There is a generation of believers that will be alive when Jesus comes and they will not experience death. But, at this time, everyone else will die. That is what we all have in common. Why do we die? To find that answer we have to go all the way back to the beginning of mankind— “And the Lord God commanded the man, “’You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die’” (Genesis 2:16-17). That is where death entered the human race. That is why we die. “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). Death is a judgment, a consequence of disobedience.
David was old and his “time to die drew near.” What was on his mind at that time? His desire was to speak to Solomon about being faithful to the Lord God Almighty and to keep His Word. His desire was that Solomon would follow the Lord God Almighty— that was what was most important to communicate with last words. Then “Then David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David.”
“Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away… Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:10, 12). When your time to die comes, what will be your final words and who will you desire to speak them to? My only desire would be that my children, all of them, faithfully follow our Lord and encourage their children and children’s children to do the same. Also, to encourage any other person they can to faithfully follow the Lord as well.
Yes, we all have at least one thing in common— we will all die. Prepare now for that time. You never know when it will happen. Only our Lord God Almighty knows. “Show me, LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is” (Psalm 39:4). Because “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). So, Dear Father, please help me to spend the time You have given me wisely and finish the work You have given me. Yes, please help me to focus on Your desires with the time I have left.
