YOUR HEART’S TREASURE

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also… No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. —Matthew 6:19-21, 24

Down back of our house in the woods sits a car out of the 1950’s or I should say it once was a car. When we first moved here 28 years ago, the car still had some shape, not much, but you could still tell it was a car. Not today. Now it is just rusty pieces of metal on the ground. If you were not intentionally looking for it you would not even see it. Over the years the elements have done their job and rust ate the car away.

Everything on this planet is wearing down and is so temporary… except for the soul of man. The soul of man, the real person inside that shell of a body will exist in either heaven or hell forever. Since that is the case, where should we be putting our focus?

What do you and I treasure? The answer comes when we consider what our heart is fixed on. What is the focus of our life? Where do we spend our time and treasure, use our talent, apply the gifts and resources delegated to us as stewards of the Lord Jesus Christ? What/who do we really value?

Do we focus on serving the Lord wherever we are? Or, are we focused on what self wants? Anything that comes before the Lord is an idol according to Exodus 20:3. He needs to be the Master of our lives or someone or something else is. Oh, that we would focus on the eternal and not the temporal!

Dear Father, help me to focus on those things that will last forever— my relationship with You and people. May I seek to encourage people to know You, to love You and to live for You. May it be so!
