Honor His Name!

HONOR HIS NAME!

Now an Israelite woman’s son, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the people of Israel. And the Israelite woman’s son and a man of Israel fought in the camp, and the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the Name, and cursed…. Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death. —Leviticus 24;10-11, 16 

            How many people would be executed today if this was enforced as it was under the Israelite Theocracy?  People blaspheme the Name of Jesus constantly in our culture.  And why do people do this?  It is rebellion against God— “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (Exodus 20:7).  So often His Name is heard as a punctuation to people’s speech.  They take His Name in vain for no purpose but use His Name as a filthy cuss word.

            God has said not to use His Name this way.  When people do they are in direct opposition to Him.  The way a person speaks of another’s name is showing how they really feel about that individual.  What do people think about you when they use your name?  How are you thinking about others when you use their name?  How are people thinking when they use His Name?  The context of how a person uses the Name of Jesus will show whether they are for Him or against Him.  How do you use His Name?
