LIFE IS FLEETING
“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. —Psalm 39:4-7
Looking back, of course, I blinked and my life seems to have flown by up to this point. Surely, my life is fleeting and I can easily see that. “You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you.” The handbreath is the measurement across the palm at the base of the four fingers. The span is from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my little finger. Take a look at that on your hand now. That is how quickly our days go by! Our lives are not very long here. Or, our lives are like a breath. Breathe in and out. That’s how long life is for everyone. It matters not the station in life— rich or poor, powerful or not… All are like a breath.
So, why does one work just to heap up wealth? I suppose if this life is their only hope they would do so. How sad is that? But my hope is in the Lord. He is the One who gives purpose to this life. Without Him, as Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 says— “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?” There really wouldn’t be any meaning or purpose except to get what I can. But then, someone else will get that when I die. Yes, my hope is in the Lord! I am grateful, Dear Father, for drawing me to Jesus that I can have life that is truly life— eternal life. May I live faithfully with the rest of my life here and may I do so by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in the authority of Your Dear Son Jesus. Yes, may this be so! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsyAg06rbag&list=RDUsyAg06rbag&start_radio=1
