“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure… But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” —Psalm 39:4-5, 7
What a sorry state for those who are focused only on this temporary life, convincing themselves that this is all there is! If it is true that life will end here— then what? We have a certain number of days that our Lord knows— then we will no longer exist here. Oh yes, our lives are fleeting. Think of how old you already are! Whether you are 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 or even 100 years old… look how quickly they have passed by!
Truly, our days are like a “handbreadth” —the width of 4 fingers or about 4 inches. Or, the days of our lives are like a “span” — that’s measured from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger— about 9 inches. Not very long at all. Then to make the point even more about the brevity of life here, the Psalmist says our life “is but a breath.” That is not very long at all. From the time we breathe in to the time we exhale is about 4-6 seconds. Life is short… Then what?
What are you looking for? I look to the Lord because “My hope is in you.” Is your hope in Jesus? — “Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him” (II Timothy 2:11).
