I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” —I Corinthians 5:9-13
God’s Word is Truth, a Lamp, a light, endures forever, gives peace and nothing can cause a follower of Jesus to stumble if they are living according to what He says. We are not to be double-minded because that type of “person is double-minded and unstable in all they do” (James 1:8). A double minded person is, as someone has said, “a spiritual schizophrenic” — a person cannot “think, feel, and behave clearly.” This causes instability in all their life, not just part of it.
“I hate the double-minded.” These are people that can easily speak words, but they are only words. Unfortunately, it appears that many in leadership positions today, at all levels of our society, are double-minded and unstable in all their ways which is causing our nation to become very unstable.
As followers of Jesus, we are to love His Word, lovingly obey His Word and share His Word with others. He is the only real Hope for man in this world. God’s people are not to stray from His Word. They are not to be—
- Sexual immoral
- Greedy
- Idolaters
- Revilers
- Drunkards
- Swindlers
Actually, those professing to be followers of Jesus but are living like this are not even to be associated with. We are not even to share a meal with such a person as this. But this is “not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.” These sinful characteristics are those of this world’s system— those that need to “come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will” (II Timothy 2:26).
