And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the cause of those who are in the right. —Exodus 23:8
The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. —Psalm 24:1-2
Our Lord is the Owner, Creator and Sustainer of this Earth and all of creation— all that is seen and unseen. As the Owner/Creator/Sustainer of this Earth, He can do whatever He desires with it. Just as the Earth is our Lord’s, so is every person on this planet His whether they acknowledge that or not. And… He can do whatever He desires with any of us. “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?” (Isaiah 45:9). “So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him…. Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand… (Jeremiah 18:3-4, 6). He does what He pleases and we are to be faithful to His desires.
As the Owner/Creator/Sustainer of this Earth, our Lord knows everything, about everything and everybody at any time. Those who are receiving bribes in the shadows might as well be receiving them in broad daylight as far as our Lord knowing— “even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you” (Psalm 139:12). Those receiving bribes blinds their thinking. They take bribes even when it means hurting the innocent. They are selfish, self-centered, satanically motivated to do wrong. But… our Lord knows because “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). Those who take bribes are very short-sighted… or even blind. All will give account to our Lord!
As followers of Jesus we can take great comfort in knowing that He ultimately is in control and that nothing escapes His notice. We can also be encouraged that He will set all things right at some point in the future. And… we will be with Him forever and ever in heaven… that perfect place. Oh yes, even so come Lord Jesus! Dear Father it is my desire to be faithful to what you desire to do in and through my life.
